Competitive Teams

Participation on a SGHA competitive team is earned and no spaces are guaranteed, nor will every person trying out be guaranteed a space.

All participants will be assessed by independent evaluators.

Players trying out with SGHA from another association require OWHA permission to tryout (PTT) documentation to be sent by email to registrar@sgha.ca prior to attending their first tryout session or they a release from their home association. Releases must be processed electronically by the home association prior to participating in the evaluations.

Spring tryouts for U9, U11, U13, U15 and U18 competitive teams will begin in May for all players trying out for a competitive team.

Notes:

  • Tryout registration and fees must be completed and paid in full a minimum of 24 hours before your division’s first session.
  • Tryout registration fees are not the same as full-season registration fees.
  • Season registration will take place after tryouts are complete and players have been assigned to a team.
  • Fees for tryouts are $150. The tryout fee is a flat fee and covers all tryouts sessions as well as a jersey.

Tryout fees are non-refundable.

Players registered last season with another OWHA affiliated association must have a signed Permission To Tryout (PTT) form or a formal release from their previous association.  Before their first tryout session, documentation must be emailed to registrar@sgha.ca before participation.

No player will be allowed on to the ice unless all documentation and fees are in order.

Player Selection:

Player selection will be guided by a player's previous (on-going) training habits, attitude, and evaluations from their current coach in addition to the on-ice tryout session itself.

Each division will have a “Selection Committee”:

  • Head Coach of the team.
  • Evaluators selected by the head coach (will not be a parent or related to anyone trying out at that age level).
  • Up to 4 non-parent evaluators with hockey backgrounds who do not have a player in the division they are evaluating.
  • Members of the SGHA competitive committee.

Other Information:

All continuations will be posted on the SGHA website after the second session.  Every effort will be made to post the numbers the same evening as the tryout, but there may be times when they can only be posted in the morning.

  • The Head Coach will contact the final roster for each team.
  • Parents must observe the 24-hour rule on the day after these announcements.
  • All release and roster decisions are final and not appealable.

Attendance - Injuries or missed tryouts:

If a player will miss a tryout session, an email must be sent to registrar@sgha.ca 48 hours in advance.  You will be provided with information regarding any impact this missed session may have on your player’s tryout.

Medical limitations or absence will impact tryouts and placement. The SGHA Competitive Committee will use past performance, coaching evaluations, previous season statistics and other pertinent information to place the injured or absent player at the level where are they most likely to experience success.

  • An injury or absenteeism may not mean automatic placement on a competitive team.
  • Any team placement by the Competitive Committee is not appealable.
  • The injured or absentee player is still required to register and pay for tryouts in order to be considered.
  • If a player is unable to participate due to injury, a medical note must be provided stating they are unable to participate and when they are expected to return to play.

Continuations:

Following the second tryout session, the players who will continue on to the next session at that level will be posted by player tryout jersey number on our continuation pages.

If a player's tryout jersey number is not listed, they will resume their tryouts at the start of the next level.

Every effort is made to post continuations in a timely manner, please be patient as decisions are made.

Schedule:

The full tryout schedule can be found below. The dates for tryouts listed are subject to change, please be sure to check regularly for the latest news and updates.

GOALIES
